ABOUT DR. LENZ

Dr. Lenz believes that listening should be a physician’s primary quality. “A physician without patience is a physician without patients”

Dr. Lenz practices medicine in a way so that patients do not need to wait more than one or two days for an appointment and that they do not wait more than 15 minutes at the time of service. Frequently, patients can be seen on the same day of making a phone call.

Dr. Lenz and his staff attend to one patient at a time in a relaxed atmosphere and mostly in a friendly consultation room with a great view. There, the patient will see many of the non-medical interests that Dr. Lenz pursues: a classical guitar, weights and numerous pictures mountain climbing expeditions all over the world. In addition, Dr. Lenz is an avid bicyclist.

Dr. Lenz is married to a scientist and his two daughters are in medical school and in college on the East coast.

Dr. Lenz was educated and trained in Germany. After medical school he embarked on two post doctoral fellowships at the University of California San Diego and at the Salk Institute both in La Jolla. He continued his research at the University of Hamburg from which he received a Ph.D. degree in Physiology. A major focus of his research was on the effects of stress, stress hormones and neuropeptides on gastrointestinal functions. He published over 50 original articles in some of the most prestigious medical journals and contributed numerous book chapters. He lectured in North America, Europe and Japan.

Dr. Lenz completed internships and medical residencies as well as gastrointestinal fellowships first at the University of Hamburg and subsequently at UCSD. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and in Gastroenterology in the European Union and in the USA.

In 1992, Dr. Lenz left a tenured position at UCSD to solely focus on patient care on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. He was a co-founder of La Jolla Gastroenterology Medical Group and the La Jolla Endoscopy Center. He served on the board of directors of the XIMED Medical group and was Chairman of the Education Committee, the GI Section and the Medicine Department at the Scripps Hospital.

While Dr. Lenz covers all aspects of Gastroenterology, he has developed a special interest and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal disorders such as complicated acid reflux disease, reflux disease that may not be related to acid (non-acid reflux) and motor disorders of the esophagus such as Achalasia or esophageal spasm.

Dr. Lenz received the recognition as Fellow of the American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.) and Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (F.A.C.G.). He is member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Association for the Study of the Liver, the German Society for Medicine and the German Society for Gastroenterology.
